ICELANDIC SHEEP
An ancient breed
Greg's Haven
This is a short discription of the breed
Icelandic's are best decribed as a naturally short tailed, long fleeced, medium size breed comming from Iceland. The Vikings brought them there 1100 years ago. Being so isolated they are one of the world's most pure bred sheep
Ewes average 130-160 pounds and can lamb before they are one year old. Most twin after the first year and triples, quads are not unheard of. An average newbborn is 6-8 pounds and are usually able to gain one half to one pound a day on mother's rich milk. Most are pasture lambed and only moved inside for a day or two so the shepherd can get ahold of them easier. Ewes can lamb up to 10 years with some even longer.
Rams can average 180-220 pounds. Both ewe and rams can be horned or polled.
Oh yes, then there are the colors. There are two main colors black and morrit (brown) with 5 color patterns. Seeing is believing.
In these pages you will see what has become a passion for me and how it is growing bigger then I ever imagined.
